What are the adverse affect of eating a diet high in processed foods?

Being on a very tight budget we eat allot of unhealthy food. For example lunch meat, mac-n-cheese, Roman noodles, soda and cheese its. I add in fruit and veggies daily as well. So my question being what effects does a diet like this have on ones health?

The high salt content is a problem. Salt/sodium causes water retention and weight gain. Also, the preservatives are not good for you. Salt can also increase the blood pressure.

They are high in sodium, calories, and fats. It’s not healthy because they are also low in nutrients.

It adds unneccessary carbs and fat to your diet. It’s great you are consuming fruit and veggies, but carbohydrates and fats are the main culprits in weight gain. The more processed carbs and fat you consume over time, the higher your chances are at developing high cholesterol and heart disease, raising your blood pressure, and having a stroke. Of course, this is when you become overweight or obese. If you are at you normal weight, a diet high in processed food will lead you to be more lethargic and fatigued than on a healthy diet and lowers your immune system making you more susceptible to illnesses.

The biggest problem with the way you’re eating now is that it is full of empty calories. A bottle of Elmer’s Glue has more nutritional value than a box of kraft mac n’ cheese. In the long run, it really won’t ‘hurt’ you per se, but when you can afford to eat better I do urge you to do so, and it sounds like you want to.

Instead of buying a box of cheez-its, for example, you could buy a 10-lb bag of potatoes and pop one into the mircowave for five minutes and eat that instead of crackers, with a little salt and pepper, maybe some butter or cheese.

If you stopped buying soda, you’d have more money for healthy foods too – sodas are completely worthless as far as calories go, and water from the tap is free. Even only switching to tea bags instead of soda would save you a lot of money. With lunch meat, you do at least get protein – high sodium only matters if you already have high blood pressure, otherwise don’t worry too much about it.

I still eat some ramen noodles myself , but I add part of a bag of frozen veggies and beaten egg white for protein to them. I also buy mine from the Asian food store where they can be *slightly* better. When possible, get rice noodle ramen instead of wheat, as they won’t be pre-fried.

Instead of buying box mac-n-cheese just buy pasta in bulk, cheese in bulk and make it yourself. Add a can of tomatoes or a bag of frozen broccoli and you’ve just upped the nutritional value by a lot, and cut a lot of calories per serving, and stretch the entire dish by a few more days.

In the long-term, you aren’t getting enough nutrients for the amount of calories you are consuming, which is the biggest problem you’ll face eating like this.

    Good Luck.

High cholesterol for one. A diet high in processed foods is more expensive than a healthy diet. You can eat a healthy diet for about 7 dollars a day or less.
