Why women are not allowed to cook during the period of menstrual cycle?

Especially in jain’s and gujrati riligon, why people not allow women to cook and touch anyone in her menstrual cycle period ? is there any logical or scientifical reason behind this ?
It is really strange that women had to follow this for 3 days? please give me some science based answer.
